Whisky

Join us to find out how and why whisky has formed a bond amongst Scottish people for hundreds of years. We enjoy communicating the wider story of whisky in Scotland, its social and cultural resonance, as well as how to taste and the whisky making process.

Tastings

Our tastings take place at the Braemar Highland Games Centre (and include a personal tour), or we can come to you. For guests of the Fife Arms, Braemar, our tastings can take place at the hotel, using whiskys selected from Bertie’s Whisky Bar.

Our whisky tastings include four different bottlings to give a discussion of selected influences on flavour – peat, casks and maturation. We use a carefully chosen range of single malts and single cask bottlings to share at various price points.

Whisky, water of life

A whisky experience with a difference – looking at how and why the production of whisky was such an integral part of life in the remote glens of Scotland.

Discover what illicit whisky would have tasted like, how it was made in such challenging conditions, and how the people making it evaded capture. Learn how these communities lived in the remote glens of the area, how they worked the land, and why they eventually left.

We can offer this experience at a remote bothy or at the Braemar Highland Games Centre.

Whisky journeys

Speyside is famed for its whisky. Join us to learn about the ancient art of coopering at the Speyside Cooperage before visiting some of your favourite distilleries for an in-depth tour. The concentration of distilleries in the area ensures one for every palate.

There’s time for a picnic lunch or some whisky ice cream before visiting a castle or walking on one of the hill routes used by whisky smugglers in the past. On our way home we will stop for a bespoke whisky tasting at a world renowned shop.

Food pairing

Our whisky and food pairings follow the same structure as our whisky tastings, matching contrasting or complimentary local produce with our four whiskies.

We generally use salmon and cheese for these tastings, but for those with a sweet tooth, we also enjoy sharing some exquisite locally made chocolates or pâtisserie.

Sweet or savoury, these pairings elevate both elements to a new level.
